The Root of the Problem

user-pic

I've never been the girl with the cool hair. Ask anyone who's done my hair and they'll tell you I'm not really into curls or any sort of bells and whistles. When I go to the hair salon, I get it done straight. No bump. No curl under. Just bone straight.

And ever since I burned my face really badly with a curling iron back in 2001, I vowed never to pick one up again. (We're talking aloe, ice, Neosporin. You can't see the scar anymore.) It probably had something to do with the fact that I was on the phone as I tried to bump the front, but I clearly have no hair styling skills to begin with. Best to keep it simple. So the flat iron and straightening comb became my hot tools of choice. Until Kevin Ryan introduced me to his Root Control straightener last year on a shoot for Rocawear.

I love that it safely straightens my roots. It gets really good heat--you can control it based on four different settings. (Fine, Normal, Thick and Course.) The hot rod's encased in a comb so the chances of burning yourself seem next to minimal. For someone who wears hair extensions, sometimes I just need the exposed roots to be straightened. And for a klutz like me, I need all the help I can get.

Plus, you can get the R Session Tools "Root Control" on Amazon for $179.99.

I remember the time when...

...the "Thriller" video came out. My face was plastered to the storefront window of an electronic store, as they played the video on multiple sets to the crowd outside. I thought "Thriller" was one of the coolest things I had seen in all my nine years. And at 34, I still think its one of the coolest things I've seen in my entire life.

...I realized that Michael Jackson was a hard act to follow... I was at a neighborhood talent show in the Bronx and had my little routine from dance class set and ready to go... But, first up was the cutest little kid doing "Billie Jean." I was doomed...He killed it and the crowd went wild. Duh...I remember I didn't want to go on after that. My thing just seemed so lame in comparison. I knew the power of Michael Jackson and I knew that kid had already won. So I accepted my defeat... I would eventually get a pleather two-piece suit like the one Michael wore in "Billie Jean" just in case the opportunity ever arose again.

...I did a Michael Jackson impression for fashion designer John Galliano in Paris and booked a job. When I was first started out modeling in Paris, I went to see Galliano for a casting for his fashion show. I don't exactly remember how it came up, but I somehow I ended up doing "Billie Jean" for him, moonwalking down the hallway. He flipped and booked me on the spot. Ha! I redeemed myself! "Billie Jean," once the sign of my defeat, became a fashion triumph! All Hail the King of Pop!

...I turned down an invitation to visit Neverland Ranch. I can't even get into the specifics...But trust me, I'm still kicking myself for not going.

What do you remember?
